INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS (ILI) AND SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTION (sARI)

1. Case definition of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) for surveillance :

Suspected case :
Acute onset of respiratory illness with fever of >38'C or more and dry cough and with one or more of the following :
a) sore throat
b) nasal congestion/blockage
c) myalgia
d) headache
e) fits (infant)
f) vomiting (infant)
AND in the absence of any other disease.

Confirmed case :
When results from virus isolation by cell culture, PCR, serolgy or any combination of these test are positive for Influenza virus.


2. Case definition of Severe Acute Respiratory Infecetions (sARI) :

A) Meets ILI case definition (sudden onset of fever >38'C and cough or sore throat, in the absence of other diagnosis), AND

B) Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, AND

C) Requiring hospital admission


ILI surveillance during this period will involve ALL government health clinics and not limited to the sentinel sites as previously designated. Whereas, sARI suveillance will involve data collection from all government hospitals.

In view of the current global situation, these surveillance of ILI and sARI will be done daily.
